A Phoenix Named Silvia

Every December the town of Phoenixville Pennsylvania holds a festival that celebrates the towns namesake and the towns renaissance. They build a giant wooden bird, then burn it down. Under the fire are clay birds that are pit fired when the bird burns. I spent over ten years photographing the Firebird. Every year the design changes. This design, the 2011 bird, is my favorite. This design had just the head of the bird poking out of the edge of the hillside with a large paper lantern in it’s mouth that the festival called the ember. I met the designer of this bird a few years back, he bought a print and told me that the bird’s name is Silvia.
